Table Mountain is the landmark of Cape Town and can be found in every image of this beautiful city. Much of the time it is capped by a seemingly still cloud that is known as the tablecloth as it drapes itself across the top of the mountain. There are several ways to get to the top and if you do catch a clear day you will experience magnificent views. There are many hiking trails that lead to the summit that are safe and marked but please check the weather before you set off and always allow yourself plenty of time if you plan to hike back down again. If this seems like to much hard work you can always take the cable car.
The Atlantic beaches are a magnet for tourists and locals alike and you will find some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in the world. There are kilometres of white sandy beaches broken by wild rocky outcrops that are pounded by the freezing surf. Clifton & Camps Bay are the cities trendiest beaches. Clifton is almost always sheltered from the wind and Camps Bay has a beautiful beach that is only 15 minutes from the city centre so it is very popular. There are plenty of good restaurants and bars to enjoy a drink or two as the sun goes down and then enjoy the nightlife into the early hours.
False Bay is to the southeast of the city centre and while the beaches are not as pretty or popular, the waters are slightly warmer and therefore make for more pleasurable swimming.
The Victoria and Albert Waterfront or, The Waterfront, is a popular, atmospheric port area with good attractions and has everything a tourist could wish for. You can enjoy some good food in the many exquisite restaurants or go shopping for hours.
Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve has some fantastic scenery, walks and some deserted beaches. You can easily spend the day here admiring the wildlife and there are plenty of tours to choose from if you wish.
Flights to Cape Town, there are plenty of airlines including low cost carriers in the UK that fly directly to Cape Town International airport, they can be quite pricey depending on the season and you can consider a flight with a stopover to reduce the cost although this of course eats into your holiday time. Flights to Cape Town are relatively long, around 12 – 13 hours, but the journey is more than worth it
If you are staying for more than a week or so you may consider hiring a car, although there is a reliable bus service even if it is a little run-down.
The winter in Cape Town is between June and August and it can get quite cold and wet, but even during these months you can experience some pleasant, sunny days. December through to March are the warmest months and temperatures can get quite hot
