The capital city of Bridgetown dominates St. Michael parish. Here, history thrives at several attractions. Off Brownes Beach divers can explore shipwrecks in the Carlisle Bay. An ever-popular local beach, Brighton is an amazingly long stretch of beach also in this parish.
Bridgetown offers interesting things to see, the central point is Main Street, all the major shops and night time entertainment are centred on this area. Bridgetown has a number of sights including Queens Park with the biggest baobab tree in the West Indies.
In the heart of the city is National Heroes Square, originally called Trafalgar Square and home to the first tribute to Lord Nelson. The Bay of Carlisle is the only natural harbour and home to a variety of cruise liners that come to Barbados as part of their Caribbean tour and holidays.
Bridgetown is known for its night time entertainment, and offers bars that are filled with life where the people are friendly and the atmosphere inviting. Happy hours are a popular ritual when rum flows smoothly and the Caribbean charm works wonders.
The islands climate tends to be nice throughout the year although June to October is the hurricane season. The peak season is December to May as they are the cooler and dryer months.
The international airport is 10 miles from Bridgetown and is undergoing a large expansion. There are several airlines that offer direct flights. Buses are the best and cheapest way to manoeuvre around the island and there are plenty of taxis available and the fares are fixed by the government. Renting a car offers you more freedom to get around and you also drive on the left-hand side here, temporary driving permits are required and they are easily obtainable.
