Berkshire is a county filled with exquisitely maintained villages and stunning countryside. Home to some of the country’s most important figures and birthplace to Winston Churchill. Windsor Castle is home to the grandest resident, the Queen and a visit to Windsor Castle should be considered an absolute must. Windsor is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world, and fortunately for us visitors a great deal of it is open to the public.
Hampshire is rich in amazing golden age history and well worth seeing and Winchester was the kingdom’s former capital (known then as the Kingdom of Wessex). Easily reached from London, this beautiful cathedral city makes a great weekend getaway.
The New Forest is set in green and pleasant Hampshire, the New Forest is England’s newest national park and covers 150 sq miles of woodland and wild heaths. To really get a feel for the New Forest it’s best to get off the roads and onto the hiking and cycling tracks. Famously the New Forest is home to a breed of wild ponies, known as the New Forest Ponies, they roam free throughout the park and a great way to get up close is to take a trail-ride, there are around 3 horse riding stables in the forest, and offer a superb way to enjoy this beautiful landscape.
Wiltshire is a rural area and home to some of Britain’s most important prehistoric sites, among them the mystical Stonehenge. This 5000 year-old stone circle is Europe’s most famous prehistoric site that still baffles archaeologists and tourists alike. Salisbury is a great base for touring the area and there is also he Salisbury Cathedral, one of the most beautiful churches in England.
