Arguably, Cornwall’s coastline is the best in Britain. With secret coves, plummeting cliffs offering awe-inspiring views and beaches that keep visitors returning year after year.
Devon's twin coastline has long been Britain’s most popular tourist resort and has some of the most beautiful countryside. There are countless picture-postcard villages to stay at or visit from the bustling resorts on the southern coast to the quieter more sleepy villages on the northern coast.
Dorset boasts beautiful beaches along its Unesco Heritage Site coastline and also some great ancient remains inland. Much of Dorset’s beaches are made up of the charming bucket-and-spade resorts whilst the low rolling hills inland shelter some quaint villages.
Somerset; the charm of this area really lends itself to being a great place for walking and cycling between the picturesque villages that are dotted amongst the hills. The massive 3-day music festival is held in Glastonbury and it is the music event of the year. Exmoor National Park is small but breath taking with a diverse selection of wildlife, stunning villages and dramatic coastal cliffs.
Bristol is a hip and happening city that has emerged as the hottest spot in southwest England, with state of the art architecture and a vibrant youth culture. Whilst in Bristol it would be impossible to ignore the work of the Victorian engineering genius Isambard Brunel, his work is evident as soon as you cross his great 75 meter high Clifton Suspension Bridge.
There can be very few cities in the world to match the grandeur of Bath, and it would be a crime not to visit. The hot springs of Bath have been attracting visitors for over 2,000 years – but the 18th century aristocrats who built their stunning regency homes out of the gorgeous honey coloured stone created the Bath we see today.
Walkers should head to Dorset, to the Isle of Purbeck where they will find the beginning of the superb Jurassic Coast. This part of the world is also great for rock climbing, Poole harbour is a little further south – near to the very swish Sandbanks this is a huge sailing and windsurfing centre.
