Bulgaria has become increasingly desirable. With long sandy beaches, alpine ski resorts, golf courses and incredible value for money, Bulgaria is a popular holiday destination. Well maintained hiking and horse riding trails allow you to discover Bulgaria's lush landscapes, inhabited by wildlife now becoming scarcer elsewhere in Europe.
The Black Sea Coast has warm sea temperatures, a sunny climate, picture-perfect white sand beaches with many villas and apartments to rent. Divided into two parts, Southern resorts, near the city of Bourgas, have picturesque bays and unusual rock formations. The famous resorts on the South are Sunny Beach and St Vlas. Northern resorts such as Varna are characterized by safe swimming and clean, wide sandy beaches.
Borovets is the biggest and most modern resort in Bulgaria and is situated in the eastern part of Rila. Winters in the resort are mild and of course with loads of snow usually from December through till April. The excellent equipment for ski sports attracts thousands of mountain lovers and there are various ski runs for beginners, intermediates and advanced skiers, designed with international markings and multilingual signs. There are ski and snowboard rental services around the Gondola lift station. Borovets is also full of bars, cafes, night clubs, and discos so there is plenty of night life to choose from.
Bankso is situated nearby the river Glazane in the north- eastern foot of Pirin, right bellow the highest and most beautiful part of the mountain. It is 160 kilometres away from Sofia and has developed into a favourite ski & snowboard destination, thanks to the excellent ski facilities combined with the unique architecture and history. Although the resort is famous for not more than 10 years it has a lot to offer to its guests. The resort has excellent snow conditions with great snow cover from December until May. The unique combination of a well developed mountain resort and a living historical town turns it into an elegant place for entertainment. Many local cafes and bars offer refreshments. Discos and night clubs work without time limit, and usually into the early morning.
Spring, particularly April to mid-June, is an excellent time to visit as the weather is good. Summer, mid-June to early September, is ideal for hiking and festivals and it’s also the peak holiday season, especially on the Black Sea coast. By mid-October the weather gets colder over the next two months for the arrival of winter, December to March. The first snows fall in around mid-December and the ski resorts start to perk up and they sometimes stay open until mid-April. The high season along the Black Sea coast is mid-July to late August; at the ski resorts, its Christmas/New Year and February to mid-March.
The main international airport is Sofia airport although some airlines also fly to/from Varna and, in the summer you can fly direct to Burgas. Plovdiv airport is only used by occasional charter flights to the ski resorts.
Getting around the country is easy, with cheap and efficient public transport to ferry you between the cities and into the remoter, rural corners.
