After more than a decade of civil and ethnic unrest, Croatia is once again emerging as an attractive tourist destination. Officially the Republic of Croatia, it is in Central European its capital (and largest city) is Zagreb. The Dalmatian Coast is definitely the highlight of Croatia with its stunning coastline, clear water, hidden coves and beautiful bays - the islands are also a definite must.
With its magnificent coastline, 1,185 islands, islets and reefs, Roman ruins and picturesque medieval villages, Croatia is fast becoming a rival to the magical Greek islands - alluring for lovers of fun, sun, local colour, great food and history.
The most prominent feature of Croatia's tourist industry is its Dalmatian coastline, which is indented with rocky cliffs, peninsulas and small inlets. This Croatian province is once again beginning to enjoy a tourist boom reminiscent of its heyday in the 1930s.
Most people visit Croatia between April and September. May and June are great months for all outdoor activities (except skiing). July and August are the most popular months to visit as the tourist season swings into gear. September is also a nice month to visit since it’s not as hot as summer, although still warm, and there are less the crowds.
The major airports in the country are at Dubrovnik, Pula, Rijeka, Split, Zadar and Zagreb.
Bus services are excellent and relatively inexpensive. Any valid driving license is sufficient to legally drive and rent a car; an international driving license is not necessary.
