Campaign to stop mobiles on planes
A campaign has been started to prevent airlines allowing passengers to use mobile phones on planes.
Recently a Qantas flight was forced to make an emergency landing caused, according to some reports, by a mobile communications device interfering with the planes’ flight controls.
Edinburgh and Manchester get new flights to Sardinia
Low cost airline Ryanair is opening two new bases on the Italian island of Sardinia and will launch flights from Manchester and Edinburgh airports to Sardinia next year.
The new bases on Sardinia will be at Alghero and Cagliari, opening in March 2009. They will create 8 new domestic and 11 new international routes, including the flights to and from Edinburgh and Manchester.
A brand new Boeing 737-800 will be based at Alghero operating 18 routes to and from the city in northern Sardinia and carrying an estimated 1.2 million passengers a year.
At the Sardinian capital of Cagliari, two Ryanair planes will operate on 19 routes and carry a projected 1.3 million passengers a year.
The new bases at Alghero and Cagliari will give Ryanair a total of seven bases in Italy, confirming the growing importance of the country to the budget airline’s expansion plans.
New airline starts flights to Dubai and Vienna
In a brave move considering the perilous state of the airline industry, a new airline is to start flights from Stansted and Manchester airports to Dubai and Vienna.
Despite the current doom and gloom in the airline industry and the general economy, Air Sylhet believes that now might not be a bad time to start a new airline.
Heathrow Airtrack consultation begins
Consultation has started on Heathrow Airtrack, the proposed new rail link that could significantly improve journey times to Heathrow airport.
Airport operator BAA wants Heathrow Airtrack to connect Heathrow with the national rail network to the south and west of the airport. If the new rail link gets the go ahead trains will run from Heathrow Terminal 5 to London Waterloo, Guildford and Reading. In addition some Heathrow Express services will be extended through T5 to Staines.
Virgin Atlantic and BA are favourite British airlines
The annual travel trends survey reveals that British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Dubai based airline Emirates are the favourite airlines of British travellers.
When it comes to airports, the favourite airports for British respondents were Manchester airport, Singapore Changi International and Amsterdam Schiphol airport. Least favourite airport for Brits was Heathrow, followed by Gatwick.
