Time for a British victory?
This June/July sees the eagerly anticipated All England Lawn Tennis Championships return to Wimbledon, with hopes of a British victory higher than ever before.
After a successful hard court season and significantly improved performances on the clay, British number one Andy Murray has rocketed to number three in the ATP world rankings; the highest ranking for a British player since their introduction in 1973. Now in the upper echelons of his sport, anticipation of a Murray victory at the tournament is increasing apace.
Whether or not this year's tournament is a success, it will take some effort to compete with those of the past.
Last year's men's final at Wimbledon has been heralded as the greatest of all time, with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal dueling over the course of five sets in a rain-interrupted match that lasted some 4 hours, 48 minutes. As the night sky closed in, it was the Spaniard who would dethrone the Swiss maestro on Centre Court to secure his first title at the All England Club.
